Standing waves form when a forward travelling wave train and reflected waves combine through interference. A boat wake that reflects off a shoreline and combines with the initial wake is an example of a standing waves. Waves in a bath tub are anothe bexample as are waves in a coffee cup placed on a surface that vibrates. Standing waves are also very common in radio transmission lines.
