Contrary to popular impression, the educational background of the members of the Lok Sabha is generally high. A study of the composition of the 12th Lok Sabha, shows the following facts, which is quite revealing:-
"With 77.49 per cent of its members having educational qualifications of the level of graduation and above, the Twelfth Lok Sabha stood next only to the Ninth Lok Sabha which was the most educated House so far (78.23 per cent) in terms of academic qualifications. Going by any single category, graduates (including those having equivalent technical qualifications) in the Twelfth House accounted for 44.8 per cent, about 4 per cent less than the highest percentage for the category, i.e., 48.74 recorded in the Ninth Lok Sabha but 1.86 per cent more than the Eleventh Lok Sabha. The percentage of post-graduates (including those with equivalent technical education) in the Twelfth Lok Sabha was 28.16 while members with Doctoral qualification or other high academic qualifications constituted 4.53 per cent. Combined together, the post-graduates and Doctorate holders constituted 32.69 per cent in the last House. In the Eleventh and Tenth Lok Sabhas, the respective figures were 34.42 and 32.74 per cent respectively. The First Lok Sabha had the lowest ever representation in this combined category (about 21.3 per cent).
The Under-Graduates (i.e., members who studied for Graduation without completing it) as a category was included in the study for the first time in the Tenth Lok Sabha). They stood at 11.31 per cent in that House. Their percentage in the Twelfth Lok Sabha had shrunk substantially to 3.4.
The category of Matriculates/Higher Secondary or Intermediate Certificate holders had 16.82 per cent representation in the Twelfth Lok Sabha in comparison to 18.18 per cent in the Eleventh Lok Sabha. In the category of Under-Matriculates, the Twelfth Lok Sabha had 2.26 per cent representation, whereas it was 2.90 in the Eleventh and 3.57 per cent in the Tenth Lok Sabha. It was 2.09 per cent in the Ninth Lok Sabha, the lowest ever so far."
The present Lok Sabha, which is the 14th also, may not be any different.
