Troy Smith is projected to be as low as a third round draft pick. Personally, I find this insane. Anyway, that seems like a really low draft for a almost guaranteed heisman winner. Does this have the potential of being the lowest draft pick for a heisman winner? Who has the lowest right now?

Jason White won the Heisman just a few years ago as the Oklahoma Jr. QB, and he went undrafted in the NFL. Although his was a case of an ijury wrecked career, there have been countless examples of Heisman winners doing nothing or next to nothing in the pros. The Heisman, in my opinion, does not go to the best college player, rather it goes to the best player on a winning team (which is usually loaded with other great players). Jerry Rice, for example, could never have won the Heisman playing for Mississippi Valley State. The award has become overhyped, and is a poor predicter of future success. That being said, there are several NFL teams struggling at QB right now, and not a super great class of QBs entering. I wouldn't be surprised to see Troy go in the first round, maybe mid to late round.

Here is a list of former heisman winners who were either drafted lower or not at all: Jason White Eric Crouch Chris Weinke Danny Weurffel Charlie Ward Gino Toretta It isnt uncommon at all for a Heisman winner to not parlay college success into NFL success. There are a lot of factors that change from the college game to the NFL (most people forget Tom Brady never really nailed down the starting gig at the U of M, he was in a constant battle with the more touted Drew Henson). Andre Ware won the heisman and was a miserable bust in the NFL and others such as Ron Dayne, Ricky Williams, Rashaan Salaam and Ty Detmer never had any great measure of success in the NFL either. Smith was picked low because a variety of factors, he was short, there are questions about his accuracy, he doesnt throw well on the run, he played poorly in his biggest game, he has past behavior issues. He projects as a career backup, some teams believe he could be somewhat like Jeff garcia and come in and be good if he only has to perform for a short period but very few in the NFL believe he has the skill to be a full time starter...that is why he went at the end of the 5th round.

Remeber Charlie Ward? He played for the Knicks. He won the Heisman and didn't get drafted at all.

Right on - Charlie Ward won it and played hoop instead. Talk about a waste.
