i agree, because britain is a soft touch, and its seen as 'too little too late' to control people coming here unlike tougher countries like australia. its common knowledge that individuals are able to obtain fake passports and visas to get here and many work on the black market. recently in the news a journalist proved this by entering/leaving and re-entering again on fake passports and she was not pulled up at the boat port or on eurostar. the goverment are saying they wont allow any further unskilled workers here next year, but if they won't be able to control how many come here, how are they going to know or keep track of who really is skilled to work? im sure they will find a way to forge these papers as you can bet they wont already have jobs lined up.

GLH and, in his own inimitable way, wrongjon are quite right.

The reason was a demand in the British labour market that wasn't being met by people born in Britain.

And since these people from abroad were actively sought and were kind enough to respond to our cries for help, they got the jobs and consequently paid income tax, national insurance, VAT and duty on goods and services purchased.

On the question of foreign people using education and health services free of charge, it is their legal right as is entitlement to social security benefits in the case of those who came from a Country in the EEA (European Economic Area) or the Commonwealth. And in the case of people originating from elsewhere there is usually a reciprocal agreement or understanding between governments that so permit access as a courtesy.

More recently Home Secretary John Reid has stated that unskilled people from new member States to the EU (European Union, as opposed to the larger EEA) will be blocked and only the skilled worker shall be considered fit for entry to Britain.

So to address your final question, we ARE increasingly becoming more like the Aussies!

However, this may be in contravention of European Human Rights legislation. Only time will tell, and that wasn't part of your question (thankfully:)))

Unfortunately it's because far too many people in this country regard unskilled labour as somehow beneath them, despite their appalling lack of education.

The labour government's idiotic education policy of lower exam standards so that it's as good as impossible to fail and increasing university places so that 50% of school leavers are under the impression they're capable of passing a degree means that there are a lot of young people out there under the false impression that they're capable of jumping straight into some high-flying well-paid executive job.

As an employer I can only say that they have been sadly and cynically misled. Instead of creating a generation of mixed abilities to suit every level of ability and fill every niche in the employment market, we now have to import unskilled workers to do the jobs that our own unskilled workforce is unwilling to do because they're too busy trying to chase jobs that are beyond their capabilities.

They may be unskilled, but they are highly literals. over 50% of your people over the age of 16 can not read or write your language. Sad, is not it?
Do not throw stones on people for you live in a glass house .
Fact: over 60% of those entered UK in the last 20 years are university graduates. Some of them with post graduate qualifications.

Absolutely, this f**king government has sold this country, why did Tony Blair not ask the people of this country if we wanted to be over run by eastern Europeans, and also why are there so many Turks in this country, they cant all be legal, this government needs to wake up to its responsibility's to the people of Britain, and stop worrying about offending other country's, sort it out before there is some form of revolution.

Because of stupid people who vote in The Labour Party to keep these immigrants happy.

We are the laughing stock of the world because of how we are allowing our money and land to be abused. I am embarrassed of my once GREAT country. I am fed up with feeling like a foreigner and I am fed up of being criticised for having an opinion.
