My roofer is a respectable businessman, and does roofing all year long. He says it's fine to roof during the winter as long as it's not raining. Other people have told me the shingles won't "seal". I'm worried, but I want to trust my contractor. He was recommended highly by several people, also, I really can't let the roof go through the whole winter. I already have some water damage.

Yes, It is OK to have your roof done when it is in the 30's outside. You may see a few shingles that look like they are not laying down like they should when the roofers are done but don't worried about this they will lay down better after the weather gets warmer but this will not make your roof leak if the shingles are put on right. I think you made a good choice by using someone that your friends recommended. I don't think they would had recommended him if they would of had a bad experience with him their self.

As I understood it when we had our roof put on in the late fall, the shingles on the roof won't seal until spring but that as long as your contractor is a reputable one there shouldn't be any problem. So far we haven't had any problems with our roof and it has been two years since it was put on.

For your own peace of mind you may want to purchase plastic rolls to cover the unprotected wood if you are worried about moisture, and make sure the contractor will put it on if rain or snow is in the forecast. Industrial grade plastic sheeting in rolls can be used for many projects around the house if its not needed and is a wise investment in any case.
