airate it you can rent one cheap or buy one at a homedepot. once you have ran it over the yard apply some compost just load it into a seed spreader set on high output an push away , then water it regularly. cow crap works great if you can put up with the fumes.

Leave the lawn the way it is until the weather starts to cool. I put 55 gallon drums under my gutter spouts to collect water because we pay for it here. Anyway,in the fall in your region, get an aerator at the rental store and aerate the lawn. get a hand spreader at lowes or the hardware store and spread seed.get a seed that will germinate in your area of the country. Everywhere you have a hole and a seed goes in you will have grass. Do yourself a favor and spread some lime, granular lime about 200 lbs per 1000 sq ft. Aerating the lawn helps open up your soil and benfits the lawn. You need not spend alot of money to do this. Water the newly seeded holes in the early evening, every day till the seed sprouts. On seeing the first grass seedling put do starter fertilizer. Use the recommended rate. Good luck to you.

Is Oz a watering solution? Water is always good for grass but so is fertilizer. You might have a common Southrn California problem called crab grass that turns brown and has to be treated as a weed because it chokes out green grass. The previous owners may have had female dogs whoes urine kills grass. This is not an old wives tale, the brown spots have to be washed and reseeded. So water as a start, but take a clump to a agriculture lab or a Nursery and ask them to identify which type of grass it is, then you can effectively revive your lawn.

You typed Oz did you mean Og as in Organic?
A couple methods
If you have access. Assuming you get snow in the winter.
After first frost, spread about 1 " of composed manure on the ground
Another, Get a bag of cow manure
1 ea 5 gal plastic bucket with a top.
1 leg of panty hose
an empty 3 lb coffee can
Put 3 lb can full of manure in the panty hose leg, Knot the top
Place in 5 gal bucket and fill with water.
Cover and let it steep for a week
Get a 6 gal or better an adjustable hose end sprayer
(the ortho one has a strainer to prevent plugging)
Strain manure tea in the sprayer jar, add a TBSP of epsom salts.
Water the lawn this way every week or 2. This is a slow but sustaining method.
A couple notes
1. Buying panty hose is cheaper than 'souveniers'
2. You might need a few buckets, depending on lawn size.
3. I got my buckets at a local deli for free.

It might seem too simple but it would probably help if you spray a bit of water on it each evening. And try not to let it get walked (or driven) on too much while it is regrowing. Mow it long when it starts to grow back (water has amazing results on grass) and not too often. Let it flower a bit - the dried flowers have seeds in them. A little bit of nitrogen rich fertiliser lightly scattered as top dressing will help if it's watered in well. Really, water and less wear are the keys to healthy lawn grass.

I have found with my lawn making sure it has weed and feed over it.
Also using an old rake i have moved the soil around a little without breaking the mat of grass.
Also a light cover of sand Also helps in a few places.
Make sure you dont have any other pests like beatles etc.

Not much info to go on reseed your lawn every year with a spreader or just take a handful out of the bag and scatter and spot kill weeds that show. or else get some sod and roll it over the top, the orginal grass will grow back through along with the weeds

check for army grubs; they can destroy a lawn overnight by eating the roots and stolens of grass. aeration by either stealing your local golf clubs greens coring machine, or by using worm casting juice broadcast accross affected areas to encourage worm activity that will inturn encourage natural aeration and assist in loosening the soil to allow for grass roots to spread. watering at most effective times of the day when evaporation is least. fertilising with high Nitrogen content, that also has phosphorus to encourage leaf and root growth respectively. Make sure you encourage the best type of grass suitable for your climate, soil type and amount of sunlight. allow grass to grow a bit longer before cutting is also helpful in encoraging deeper root penetration; thus assisting in reaching down for more water and nutrient.
My prefered option would be the old mulching and planting out trick.......no worries about a lawn then.....and you can also recycle newspapers and cardboard. initial outlay of woodchip or fines is offset with the no longer needing of petrol $ for mowing.
chook tractors also are a great idea; with natural fertiliser and rewards of scrambled eggs for brekkie.
