assuming you correctly transferred songs onto it using iTunes (I'll go out on a limb and assume you're using the default software) then you should be able to press the middle button (in the centre of the round "Click wheel") You might need to hold it for 3 seconds to get it to switch on. If this doesn't work, your hold switch may be on. The hold switch is the one on top, and should be switched so no red/orange is showing.

One of 2 things will happen. Either an apple logo will show, and then it will go to the menu, or it will just so straight to the menu. Either way, you should end up at the menu. (If not, repeatedly click the "Menu" button at the top of the "Click wheel" until you get there)

Now, lightly slide your finger along the wheel in a clockwise motion, which will move selection down. Stop it over "Music" and press the middle button. Slide around the wheel again to get to "Songs", and again press the middle button. Now, you can either slide around till you have selected the song you want, or just start at the top. press the middle button to start playing.

While playing, the wheel changes volume. pressing the middle button will change the scrollbar, and you can move foward or back through the song. again, and you can rate the song.

The battery will last (According to my housemate, who has a nano - I have a u2 video ipod) about 12 hours of continuous music. Apple says it's meant to last 24 hours. Your results will vary.

As for charging, it takes about 2 hours to get about a 80% charge, and another 2 to fully charge. this is from empty, so if you get into the habit of plugging it into the computer each night for about an hour, it should stay pretty charged up. Plus, it's an opportunity to sync new music onto it, and so on.

ok ... first ... face the ipod towards yourself ... there would a hold button on the top side ... it should not show red ... if it does move it the other way ... now to start listening to music click the centre of the wheel ... the screen will switch on ... you can circulate the ring to move up and down ... move to music and select by clicking the centre of the wheel ... select and click on songs now ... u ll have all ur songs there ... select the one u like by hiliting it and clicking the centre of the wheel ...

You should charge it all night - until the battery is full - and the battery should last about 4-6 hours I think.

You can either read the booklet for the quick start or go online to http://www.apple.com and read the manual.
