If a reputable publishing house is interested in you and your manuscript or book, you will not be expected to spend any of your own money. In fact, the publishing house will often pay you money upfront in the form of an author's advance. If you decide to publish the book yourself, don't go to what is called a vanity press. They tend to charge lots and deliver very little. A couple of sites you might want to look at are:
