why are large particles found on the top of a beach?

ive always wondered why big boulders and rocks are found high upthe beach rather than lower! does any1 know why?

Larger pieces tend to sit on the sand in the seabed, wave action tends to scoop the surface of the sand, which then flings objects to the crest of the wave.. voila ..top of the beach!
