Star Wars is the ultimate cowboy movie, only the cowboys don't ride horses, they fly space ships. Luke Skywalker was the "Hero", Han Solo was the guy who's always on the edge but does the right thing in the end; Princess Leia was the Heroine that everyone wanted to save and court; and Darth Vader was the outlaw who goes around killing the settlers to get their land for his evil boss, The Emperor. The special effects were stunning, even today they look good. The storyline was pretty good (at least for the first 3 to come out). They truly changed the face of Sci-Fi and were the model to go by until Independence Day and Jurassic Park came along.

They are ground breaking. Science Fiction hasn't been the same since 1977! The special effects and blue screen hadn't been used like that before. And the plot was like a Western in space.
To get a better idea, try watching 2001:A Space Odyssey. Until Star Wars came along, it was considered the best science fiction movie ever.
Without Star Wars, it's a safe bet that none of the Star Trek movies would've been made either.

The very first Star Wars was fantastic and it was really a new concept for movie goers. I don't think any of the movies since has lived up to the first, but people are so hooked and sentimental they go nuts anyway. I think the last 3 installments weren't so great, but I saw them anyway cause its STAR WARS! My husband cracks me up, cause he's always criticizing George Lucas yet still hands over his money to the man.

i don't understand either! it makes no sense to me as this movie franchise is famous for movies that only sci-fie geeks can enjoy. i don't care which planet is being destroyed and by which alien or whatever, it just doesn't appeal to me at all. everyone has an opinion and i am not dissing star wars fans but i don't see the importance or value of those films and why they have such a cult following because they are not even remotely true to real life and deal with no real issues at all. but whatever it's just my opinion...good question though....

I was never a Star wars fan and I'm still not a fan. My uncle got me the Phantom Menace and I reluctantly watched it. I loved it.

i dont really understand the fascination and how fans go sooo overboard with it (ex: dressing up for star wars conventions). the movies are ok and kinda funny, but i also find them kinda boring.
