Short answer - You can't. Apple made it so music will only go onto the ipod, and not from ipod to pc. This is to stop music piracy.
Long answer (Windows) - Open iTunes, and set it to copy music into the itunes folder when added to library. Set your ipod to Manual sync, and enable disk use. Your ipod will show up as a usb disk in "My computer", open it. Look for a folder called "ipod_control". Not there? Then you need to show hidden folders.
In the folder window, click "view", "Folder options", and in the resulting box, click the "View" tab. In advanced settings, there should be a option to "Show hidden files and folders". Ypu want this selected.
Inside the ipod_control folder, there will be another folder called music. In there, all those folders contain music. Drag the "music" folder over the "Music" tab under "Library" Your music should copy over.

I know what you mean i am not sure because on itunes you can update your iPod manually or automatically. If you update it automatically then you have a a complete copy of the songs that are on your iPod in your library in iTunes but if you update it manually then you don't cause you remove the songs when they have been transferred cause it becomes very confusing if you don't. I got a new ipod recently and i wasn't able to take a note of the songs that i had on it and had to sit and upload all the song back on which was a nightmare. I think that we should let apple know that we need a feature to save the music on the ipod.
I hope that this helps you!!

I've done this
i have a pc i hope you have one, lol:
In a nutshell you would just enable show hidden files and folders and go to the Ipod drive and just look for the files.
If you do not know how, Let me give it to you step by step,
1 Click on "My Computer" icon on desktop or the start menu
2 You sould have an I con that says IPOD or a drive that wasn't available prior to you pluging your ipod, click on it You should have some files, five of them which are folders
3 Go to on the Menu Bar, then folder options.
4 Click on the view tab
5 You will see a scroll bar. scroll down until you see "Hidden files and folders", check "Show hidden files and folders." Click OK
6 You will see a semi transparent folder "iPod_Control," click on it
7 Click on "Music" folder
8 And there you would see folders which contain your files. The trick with thi is that the files would have names like PSEH or JZAZ. If you have the option where the artist and album is on the display this should be no problem.

Plug in your ipod, and upload all the songs onto itunes. You can also plug in your iPod, go to search songs and select your Ipod, then all the songs that are on your iPod will automatically be uploaded in to itunes.

I didn't think you could. I thought the IPOD automatically syncs with the computer library that it is hooked up too, overwriting the music already on the player. Hmm. Hope some one can help you!
