It's a fair question .... just because you can play a musical instrument don't mean you can sing ... you may play the harmonica .... hard to do both at the same time

No, it is a perfectly valid question. Both are different skills and needs to be learnt. Though, people who play the guitar may be better at singing. Guitar is more of a social instrument in the sense that you can carry it wherever you want and you can play it as you sing. So they normally get into the habit of singing along as they strum their guitar.

This is not the case with other musicians, perhaps an exception could be pianists; again they would be very few in number. So, if you have been in the habit of singing as you play your instrument then you can sing well otherwise you will be as good as somebody who cannot sing.

Yeah, not really. Some musicians sing, some don't. Some singers play an instrument, some don't.

People don't mean to be insulting. Most can't carry a tune in a bucket and are fascinated by talented people.

Hmmm.... Someone who is a musician doesn't necessary sing. I suppose it's a way of them asking a question to garner more information into what you, the musican, actually does, whether you just play a instrument, compose music, etc., etc. Someone who is a singer who say they're a musician may be offended if they're asked what instrument they play.

not rude, just kinda dumb. a better question would be "what do you play?" or "what style are you?"

are opera singers and stuff considered musicians? i think they are considered classical musicians. are you wearing a hat with horns at the time?

i play about a dozen instruments, and that's the first question i get too... i though it was rude and sexist at first, because i thought that it was because i'm a girl and they didn't imagine that i'd be lead guitarist of a rock band, or the drummer for a punk band... they'd ask, "oh are you a singer then?" i've since decided that people are just uninformed.

the worst is when people ask me "are you guys soft?" (even when i specify "punk," or "stoner metal") because i'm a 23 year old girl that looks like a 17 year old girl.... sucks.

No, It's no worse than them asking if you play drums when you actually play guitar. They are merely trying to find out what you do with your band.
