Lawyers have to have a clean record, pass a background test, and become a member of the state bar.

Bar membership requirements vary from state to state, but the majority require completion of a law degree, passing the state bar exam and passing the Professional Responsibility exam.

Lawyers have to be able to read and understand complex arguments and discussions. They are very good a communicating both in writing and orally. Research skills combined with an ability to summarize and get to the real issues are important.
