Because there are only 10 schools in the conference. Conferences with 10 schools (PAC-10, Big-10, WAC) do not break down into divisions.
12 team conferences (SEC, ACC, MAC) break down into 2 divisions of 6 teams each. These conferences use championship games between the first randked team in each division to determine the conference champ.

If the 10 team conferences could somehow lure the independents (Notre Dame, Temple, Navy, Army) into joining, we would be another step closer to a playoff system in Div 1-A football.

So are you a Michigan fan crying about how Ohio State beat you OR are you a Wisconsin fan that are upset you lost to Michigan and want a chance? Sorry I think those are about the only two teams that want a playoff this year. I don't see any reason for a playoff. They play the regular season and most of the teams play each other. I could see a case where if they Conference had two undefeated at the end of the season that they SHOULD have a Championship but short of that no need for one. The Big East doesn't have a Championship game either, although EVERY team plays each other. Now if Wisconsin had beat Michigan then there would be reason to say the two should play a game against each other for the Championship instead of whatever they would use to break the tie.

In years past the Big 10 Champion was decided by a balanced schedule. Every team would play the other nine once each football season.

With the addition of Penn State to the conference and the BCS mess that altered the Rose Bowl teams, there is little need to determine the conference champion. The only votes that matter now are the BCS.

specific the nhl has 80 two accepted video games, and then a 28 game format to ascertain the winner of the stanley cup. the percentages maker for hockey probably ought to'nt care much less related to the effect. Its the effect of all their activities and playing that count variety. i could wager that the accepted usual is above 500 for hockey while placed next to a 10 twelve months unfold. consistent with danger no longer for choosing the sc winner from pre-season, yet from the accepted effect of the winner of a hockey game. lol :)

There aren't enough good teams in the conference to warrant a playoff. It could be that is why they call it "Big Two/Little Eight".

actually there are 11 teams in the big 10. i heard a couple of years ago they were thinking about trying to get Notre Dame in the Big 10 and do a championship game like the reat of them. then they realized that Ohio State and MIchigan wouldn't play every year so they nixed it.

Because you can't have a conference title game if your conference has less than 12 teams in it, per the NCAA.

i agree with Doug F. they should get Notre Dame to join and make it an even 12 team conference..

they'd have to change from Big-10 to maybe
BIG-12-part-two!
