Valley Girl was done in 1983, but it's a terrific slice of life from the 1980s and really accessible to someone who grew up later.
You might enjoy Desperately Seeking Susan, DEBS, or Camp.

how about '80's flick "Welcome to the Dollhouse"? or you could watch german flick Was Nutzte Leibe in Gedanken, about a bunch of bohemian teenagers during the 1920's....
Then there is "Sexy Boys", something like the French version of American Pie.
