Smyrna (present-day Izmir, Turkey) is on the Aegean Sea. There are Greek ruins at Sardis (called "Sart Mustafa" in modern Turkish), which is about 60 miles east of Izmir. There are significant Roman ruins, as well as nearby modern towns, at Ephesus and Pergamum, both close to Izmir.

The seven churches of Asia (properly Asia Minor) are seven major churches of the early Christianity, as mentioned in the New Testament Book of Revelation. All sites are in modern-day Turkey.

It should be understood that "churches" in this context refers to the community of Christians living in each city, and not merely to the building or buildings in which they gathered for worship.

The seven churches are located in:

Ephesus: used to be Apasa, capital of the kingdom of Arzawa.
Smyrna: modern day Ä°zmir
Pergamon: modern-day Bergama
Thyatira: modern-day Akhisar
Sardis: modern day Sart
Philadelphia: modern-day Alaşehir
Laodicea: near modern-day Denizli
