Some of you are going to be immature enough to make fun of me, but this is a very serious matter. I am wondering if anyone has had or know of anyone with this problem:

I have been gaining weight like crazy. When I first realized this, it was about a year ago...and I had gained about 5 lbs in a couple of weeks. That was shocking to me, but not too tramatic. I decided to excercise a little more, adding 15 more mins to my walking per day, and 15 mins to my cardio 3 times a week. Nothing...as a matter of fact, I gained more weight. My diet never changed for the worse. I did not eat anymore nor did I eat anything unhealthy. BUT, I decided to cut the carbs almost completely and increased cardio by 5 more mins 3 times per week, leaving my walking the same. Still I gained. I thought I was pregnant...(missed my cycle), and wasn't. I have continued to gain. I have gained a LOT in the last yr, and 35 lbs since Sept in spite of a healthy diet and regular excercise. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME? HELP!!

BTW, the dr has checked my throid and other things. He claims I have polycystic ovaries. Could this cause this? I have tried several diets and nothing is working, any ideas? I am desperate.

I just responded to your other question about the increased hair, but I thought I would tell you about this one too.

Increased weight, and difficulty loosing weight are symptoms of PCOS. It is very likely the culprit in your case.

Here's a brief "Why this happens"....

Many women with PCOS are insulin resistant, meaning that when they eat something their body produces the right amount of insulin to counter the sugars/carbs in the food. Unfortunately their insulin receptors don't recognize the insulin that is being produced. The body keeps calling for more insulin, and the pancreas keeps spitting it out. All the extra insulin is then turned into fat cells. Now picture this happening everytime this woman eats something. It's no wonder that she will gain weight.

There are methods of treating this weight gain though. The first of course is exercise (which it sounds like you are doing a great job at), the second is low-carb diets (a PCOS body can't handle the extra carbs), and the third possibility if the other two alone don't work is a drug called Metformin. Metformin is a drug most commonly presribed to type-2 diabetics. It helps the insulin receptors to recognize the insulin that the pancreas is providing.

Some women (me included) see their weight decrease when taking Metformin. There are a couple of reasons for this too, the first being that the insulin is being used properly, and the second being that the drug seems to decrease appetite a bit. Your body is using the fuel that you provide it properly so you feel full faster, and don't get hungry as often.

I hope this helps, and I hope it doesn't scare the crap out of you. You aren't alone in this, studies say that 1 in 10 women has PCOS. There are a lot of women that are going through the same things that you are.

Pushing yourself too much on your goal of losing weight has somewhat done some abnormalities in your appetite. It's not that simple as you think it may be. You can eat anything but in moderation of course. You've got to have self- discipline if you really want to achieve your goal. A great work out, perfect diet tips and lots of patience can help you gain back some weight and healthier you.

If you have polycystic ovary disease, you are likely to experience some of the following symptoms:

Abnormal, irregular, or scanty (very light or infrequent) menstrual periods
Absent periods , usually (but not always) after having one or more normal menstrual periods during puberty (secondary amenorrhea)
Weight gain, even obesity
Insulin resistance and diabetes
Infertility
Increased hair growth; distribution of body hair may be in a male pattern
Virilization -- development of male sex characteristics in a female. This may include an increase in body hair, facial hair, a deepening of the voice, male-pattern baldness, and clitoral enlargement.
Decreased breast size
Aggravation of acne

I have read that there are some balanced-nutrition, dietary supplements available in some good American Companies, such as, Herbalife, and one of their good health supervisors, along-with your own trusted dietitian, can help you to a large extent.

stop eating altogether but of course drink lots of water. do this for about a month and if you still are gaining weight you probably were abducted by aliens and they laid eggs in your stomach.
or you have a split personality and and that person is gorging in the middle of the night with out you knowing, maybe you can use that for a cover story.
