"It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live."
"So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen
And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done."
Strictly speaking "My Song" was not a number one hit for Elton.
It reached number 8 in the USA and 7 in the UK.
Sweet and simple lyrics!
It did receive high praise from some reputable sources however:
All Music Guide wrote that the song "is a near-perfect song". John Lennon is quoted as saying the song is "the first new thing that's happened since we (The Beatles) happened".
In 2004 Rolling Stone included the song in their 2004 list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time at #136.
"Daniel" is my favourite Elton hit that did reach number one in the USA
No discussion of Elton's hits could overlook "Rocket Man".
"And I think it's gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home"
Thanks for the great question!

Technically, his biggest hit was : "Candle In The Wind 1997", it became the biggest selling single of all-time, knocking Bing Crosby's "White Christms" off the top spot. "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" w/ Kiki Dee was also a huge hit in 1976 in the top spot for 4 or 6 weeks (can't remember! LOL!) it was his first in the U.K, but his first solo U.K. #1 was "Sacrifice". "Crocodile Rock" was his first #1 on 3 February 1973 and was there for 3 weeks.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Rocket Man, Levon, Don't Go Breakin My Heart, Little Jeannie, The ***** Is Back, Candle In The Wind, (Or Funeral To A Friend), and the beautiful, Sacrifice and Nikita. I couldn't pick just one, I love Elton John, then and now.

I rather like "Babies got Blue Eyes" and "Candle in the Wind" (both versions - the original for Marilyn Monroe and the Princess Di version)
I think his funkiest one was "Crocodile Rock".

"I Guess that's why they call it the blues'. Don't wish it away
Don't look at it like it's forever. Between you and me i could honestly say that things can only get better. While i'm away
dust out the demons inside, and it won't be long before you and me run to the place in our hearts where we hide. And i guess that's why they call it the blues. Time on my hands could be time spent with you.

#1, I guess "Don't go breaking my heart" because it's his first and only one during his greatest era of music
