Mobile phones (car phones) have been around for decades and were affordable to only the wealthy and with poor audio quality. More of a status symbol than a reliable communications device.

Cell phones came into being as early as 1972 in the San Francisco Bay Area, aka Silicon Valley.

Probably arourd the late 70's early 80's. Search for history of the cellular phone. Look it up in the encyclopedia.
