I have a wireless network connection configured at home for my desktops & wireless laptop. But when I visit my sister, I would like to connect my laptop to ONLY her internet connection which is a wired dsl modem.

I do not want to set up a wireless network on her pc because I only need to connect to her internet access, I do not need to connect to her desktop. I would prefer to do this wirelessly instead of connecting to her DSL modem with an ethernet cable, unless I absolutely have to.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Well, you will need to setup a wireless network to some degree.

The cheap and easy method I've used is to buy a netgear wireless access point.

Most of my advice for wireless is in using routers, but in your case a wireless access point will suffice, as long as she has a router.

You can then set up the AP just as if it were a wired connection in a sense. It just sends the access over 802.11G.

You can configure the device so that it is incrypted and will only talk to your laptop. You can even keep it with your bag and use it wherever you are. It's really nice when traveling to other offices, if you do.

The unit I've speced out for you is about the size of a bar of soap.

you elect a instant-able router. it relatively is it. You connect it on the "lower back" ingredient of the DSL modem, between the modem and the triumphing laptop. opposite to what yet another responder suggested...do no longer configure the instant get right of entry to making use of your laptop. The router you purchase could contain a CD which will tutor you or walk you interior the path of the installation. do this basically with a working laptop or laptop under pressure directly to the router (your laptop, or making use of the under pressure Ethernet connection on the laptop). as quickly as you have each thing rigged up, configure the laptop to hook up with the wireless sign on the router. be certain you placed up an encryption configuration on the router, so your archives is risk-free on a similar time as you employ the wireless. set it up for WPA encryption, if your hardware helps it, because it relatively is stringer than WEP. purely save on with the educational that contain the router.

You have two options, First your sister must have a network adaptor for wireless internet connections. Its like a card (probably like the one you have at home) installing into her computer. so when your over at her house your laptop will think its still at home.
Next option, Have a separate dedicated line installed on your laptop, much like a cell phones connection. This way you can be anywhere and be connected to the internet at any time.
