It is an easy problem,I think.

Let the cost be x.
so the selling price will be,x+((x*35)/100).
It is equal to $670.

So,x+((x*35)/100)=670 dollar

=>x=496.296 dollar

selling price, P, is $670

he makes a 35% profit over the cost, which means that the selling price, P, is 35% more than the cost, C:

P = 1.35 x C

so C = P / 1.35 = $496.30

if a thing is sold with a profit then selling price(sp) is more than the cost price(cp) or: sp =cp+profit

we want cp, so cp = sp -profit
profit/loss is always calculated on cost price,

therefore cp = sp - (35% of cp) = sp - [(35/100)*cp] =sp-0.35*cp
=> cp(1+0.35) =sp
=> cp = sp/1.35

substitute the values:
cp = $670/1.35 = $496.29
