I taught elementary school in the 1960's and what a wonderful time it was! We were free to pledge alligiance to the flag, pray before lunch, and have a Bible study teacher in once a week. There was a Bible in every classroom, if not every desk.
I was there to guide the moral, as well as the educational, pathway of my students. I visited every home. The parents were my allies. I worried about gum stuck to the seats, not guns stuck in backpacks. I freely hugged the children and if a child needed correction, it was given without fear of lawsuits, loss of my job or my freedom. The biggest problem on the school bus was someone not getting the seat they wanted.
A lunch ticket cost $1.75 a week; recess milk was an extra 15 cents a week. Extra milk could be purchased for 2 cents; chocolate was 3 cents a carton.
Computers were unheard of but I had lots of chalk, books, paper, and time to teach the essentials beyond the "book learning." Respect was a word everyone knew and utilized. We've gained a lot since then but we've lost some very vital things too. In many ways the "good old days" really were the good old days!

The most important role they fulfilled was to know their pupils.
They took the class register at the beginning of the morning and afternoon school sessions.
They did NOT have to follow a proscribed syllabus and were allowed to introduce relevant topics into their lessons. They even spent time reading to their classes rather than programming them to pass exam.
In short they were involved in "educare" - to bring out the qualities in their students.

Teaching those who were prepared to learn and beating those who were not.

I was taught mathematics by an old Irishman who claimed to use the Thompson method. "If you don't pay attention, I'll Thompson sense into you."
