From a conservative standpoint, I'd say that 'liberal' is such a dirty word because their efforts are focused at raising taxes, making our country more socialist and our finances will be more controlled. Capitalism has been the most important factor in this country establishing it's power. Not to mention that liberals do not fight to uphold our morals in law...a vote for liberals would be a vote against God!

Obviously, I could argue the other side as well: 'Conservative' is a dirty word! They have practically thrown our Constitution on the ground and spat on it. Our country was built around the Constitution and we should fight to uphold it to the best of our ability. Poor people are dying because they don't have money to afford medical care, it's not fair for a child to die because his family couldn't afford the best doctors in the country. We have been allowing big business to run our country, republicans are corrupt!

See, it really does depend how you look at it. I've basically heard either argument from both sides an equal amount of time.

If you mean in general, liberals have never really been cast with a good light. It's generally given the connotation of a bunch of radicals who are trying to overturn the government. Liberals have often been thought of as free thinkers, which has never really been favorable in any society in the past.

And incase you were wondering, I'd tend to classify myself as a moderate - with a slight lean to the left. So I don't prescribe 100% to either of the arguments I've made.

I have often asked this question myself. Conservatives use liberal in a negative sense to describe a belief system they do not like and therefore give it negative connotations. However, many obvious and devout liberals do not seem to like the word either and seek to redefine themselves using terms like progressive. I believe that it really stems from the fact that liberal policies are failing at the polls and anything deemed too liberal is almost sure to be voted down. Facing this liberals are forced to act as though they are not liberals in order to get elected or advance their agendas in many places. Thus they reinforce the idea that it is a dirty word. Personally, I say be true to what you are and stand up proudly for it.

Because it has come to represent so many negative ideologies, philosophies, and causes that are Amoral, anti-American, anti-family, and counter-culture within our society. Such ideologies have made the USA an easy target of critics world-wide who wish to destroy us. Ironically, it is the Conservative American with the traditional value-system that protects these "nut-bags" through their services on the battle field, at the polls, and in the courts.

To me, it is disdainful because it throws me an impression of Communism, Commonwealth, slacking on rules and regulations for certain races or ethnics, etc. It is like a hodgepodge of all of those plus more. I do not like to give away my money, or be forced to by any entity, that I do not feel is rightly deserved. Especially to lazier peoples pockets. I like to be able to judge who is in need, then possibly be benevolent. Not being forced to give to a group of people that 97% do not deserve, all the while a vast amount being skimmed off the top before they receive it by politicians and scammers. Then the people being just as poor as they where before, but fed enough to rob me on the street, or revert to selling crack to my children. Give away your money if you want to be liberal, it only pisses me off when you try to make me do it. Kind of like when that religious group comes to your door when you are trying to relax, then trying to convince you you are wrong for the way you are living, and are destined to hell if you don't join them!

Liberal isn't a bad word, it's merely a term used to describe one's political ideology.

Its not.
But it was probably used in retaliation of the misuse of the word "neocon" by the I Hate Bushites.

it is not a bad word, but it reflects the bad sides that some people use it in, that's why is sometimes goes for bad things...though it is not right.

It's only a bad word for right wing nut cases! They don't even know what a Liberal is!

Republicans are excellent mudslingers and spinmeisters. They have a special ability to make anyone or any word seem bad. So did Hitler.

Conservatves made that happen because they have no good arguments against it, so they demonize it.
It's their only defense.
If your Jesus was alive, he'd be a liberal, but he NEVER lived.
