the first thing you should do before any of the above is
click start run and type msconfig select the start up tab and turn off all programs that dont need to be running, if you have xp you should be able to turn off all programs barring norton, what this does is free up your ram memory card. then i think if the problem still exists which it wont , i would run a spyware checker , but if the problem is actually on the computer and not just when on the internet , spyware isnot the problem

Looks like you've got spyware or malware on your PC...have you updated your Antivirus definitions? If not, get that done. It's possible that heuristic scanning too may not find a virus when it's there. Get a spyware removal tool. You'll find many free ones on the net. Here's a link: http://netsecurity.about.com/od/spywareadwareremoval/a/aafreespyware.htm
Also, reduce the number of memory resident programs running on your system. There should be very few programs running in your QuickLaunch bar (Shown near the system time). This should solve your problem.

Hello there, just one idea, you might have a slow CPU inside your PC. Its all very well saying "use this", and "use that", the answer just might be that your computer's CPU that means "central processing unit", the bit that make your computer work is just slow, for example the CPU is not up to the task of running today's web pages, because it takes a long time to load in very time you change from one web page to another, four years ago I had brought a computer with a CPU speed of 1.8 GHz and it was fantastic worked very well, then as the years rolled on I noticed that my computer was becoming slower and slower, like yours I had Norton symantec and it said I had no bugs or virus's, then one day I was around a friends house and saw how fast their computer was loading in software and changing web pages, they told me that the computer they were using was a Intel Pentium 4 with a 3.06 GHz CPU, so I went out and brought a new computer with similar CPU speed once again everything is working fine, so my advice to you would be, it might be a time for a change and buy yourself a new computer to keep up with the ever changing developing world of computers. if you are on a tight budget then PC world will sell you just the base unit with out the monitor complete with new keyboard and mouse so you can plug your monitor in to the new computer, if you do this I bet that this would solve your problem, and that you will be a lot happy'er. good luck

Back up importsant files you want to keep.
Make a list of the application you use the most.
Then do a new installation of your Operating software.
You may want to consider Disk partitioning.
Anyway it will be like a brand new cPC:
You will then have to reinstall all the applications you like to uzse or need, As I said it is like a completely new machine.
Then I would recommend creating something like a ghost back up....... That way if you do install something that doesn´t agree with your system yopu can backup quite easily to a version that worked.......... You just have bee disciplined in backing up your PC, It is far easier to do a sytem restore than a Complete re installation, but I I would recommend doing a complete "Re-Build " (Re-Installing Windows OS Microsoft office etc), once a year.

Try clearing out all unnecessary files, esp. .tmp files. Save, if you can, all your personal files to CD / DVD, then defrag the HDD again.
I think you might find a great improvement.
Good luck

Have you checked for spyware? That can really slow down your computer. Norton doesn't usually check for things like that.

How often do you clear cookies and temp internet files?
When was the last time you did a "thorough" Scandisc?
I would defrag it anyway, it won't do it any harm.
