My GF does not like condoms, and birth control makes her sick. She does not want kids ever. I may want kids if my relationship with her does not work out for the long term (probably a 60% chance we'll get married someday). How involved is a vasectomy? How difficult is it to reverse? What all should I worry about? Thanks!

if you want kids some day then don't get it done. it can be revered but it cost a lot and there is less than a 50% chance that it would work. i know as i have had one done and wish i never did as i am not with the same women now . would love to still be able to have kids but it's to late for me . so think long and hard before you get it done . cheers

If she is the one who does not want children she should get her tubes tied it is easier for a woman to reverse than a man especially with how modern the procedure has become. If you know for certain you want children somewhere down the line this would be the wrong way to practice birth control. There are so many ways you can practice birth control without using hormones or desensitizing condoms.

There are:

* Cervical Caps (similar to diaphram but stays inside the Dr places it and removes it when she is ready to)
* IUD (only to be used with 1 partner who you are certain has no STD's and can cause heavier periods. lasts about 5 years
* diaphram (woman places it inside to protect her cervix before having sex)
* Ovulation predictor can be purchased at your local drug store
it is like a pregnancy test except it tells the woman if she is anywhere near her ovulation time by her hormone levels. Some of them are very advanced with computer memory of her cycles and previous hormone levels. They are simple to use and cost around 100-150$ for the computerized reusable kind or the disposable kind can be bought for 10$ with 5 tests which is how many she would need for the month. simple she just urinates on a stick 5 days out of the month.

please do not ruin your chances to have the future you really want. Let her make the choice on her future by choosing a method of non hormone based birth control.

ok well if your girlfriend doesnt want kids and you do then first of all you know right there that you all will not be together for long. Secondly, if she doesn't want to have kids EVER then SHE needs to have herself fixed, which i would recommend just having her tubes tied.Having a vasectomy i'm not really sure but I thinkis irreversalable, and if it's not it will be a hella lot to go through to and a whole lot of pain,i'm thinking you would take a lot of risk of not being able to have kids or use your penis for that matter. whereas if she was to have her tubes tied, she can go through the same procedure and have them untied. As long as she does not get her tube tied, cliped and burned then she can have her tubes untied as easy as having them tied. I would not even have this vasetomy idea in my head knowing that this is not the women that you are going to be with and that you also want to have kids. It's thoughtful yes but to the extreme. She should love you then because you offered that. Did she offer having her tubes tied at all? If she didn't you really need to re think the whole relationship!

From what I hear it's permanent. If you do not love this girl 100% then DO NOT go through with it. There's no sense in ruining your chance at passing along your family name for a girl that you're not even sure about marrying. Tell her how you feel about having kids and then listen to her side of it. If you can't come to some sort of compromise then you have a tough decision to make.

Best of luck, and if you decide to go through with it then all I can say is ouch!

Vasectomies involve tying up the vas deferens- the tube that transports sperm. It can be reversed without too much hassle but you have to ask your doctor about it more first. There isn't much to worry about in the procedure- its relatively simple.

If she never wants kids she should have her tubes tied. Otherwise she'll end up getting an abortion some day.
