i wouldnt say naive, but rather optimistic. i have lived in many places, traveled extensively, and met many many people. i can say with complete confidence that most people do have at least a grain of decency in them, but there are some that clearly do not. they are simply no damn good. poison to everyone they come in contact with. selfish, cruel, hateful, spiteful, and yes, some downright evil. the idea that there is good in everyone is a wonderful concept, however it just simply isnt true. sometimes people use the illusion of good to lure people closer to them. you might think that someone is a wonderful person, only to learn later that they have some horrible ulterior motive. i may sound cynical to you, but i assure you that this is reality.

Big question. There are people who think there's no such thing as good or evil. I assume you're talking about good and evil in some spiritual sense?
It's pleasant and reassuring to think everyone has at least a tad of good in them and I prefer to think that's true. Even serial killers can paint lovely pictures. The worst tyrants in history have shown kindness to animals or love to another or some other indicator of a good quality. Assuming for a minute that there's some good in everybody, it's necessary for safety to consider that some folks have very little good in them.

My friend, maybe you need to spend some time visiting the max security block of some prisons.
But on the other hand, Cinna B would have us think, maybe, that the mentally ill are evil? Methinks there are some very "sane" people who are evil in a way that escapes notice due to its very "normality.'
I think I am like you, in that I prefer to look for the good in a person, but I have heard of some very hard cases.
What was the good in Hitler? That he used to like to paint?
And Stalin? That once he was a seminarian?
So.... how is your thinking on this these days?

Don't know if it's naive, but that's how I am: I firmly believe that there's goodness in everyone, and it's called conscience; everybody has it, some people don't know where it's hidden inside of them, but you can help them find it;)

It's positive to try to see the good in people, but sadly, in a very small minority of people, there could be some who are 100% bad. Keep on seeing the best in people though - it's the best attitude to have!

Read C.S. Lewis' book MERE CHRISTIANITY (it's not a religious book per se) however he has some very good ideas about goodness in people. He also wrote THE LION. WITCH AND WARDROBE, THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS, NARNIA SERIES. Check it out.

No, I don't think it's naive to think that way.
However, people who are mentally ill might be a different story, such as people with anti-social personality disorder; they have no conscience.
