Once Internet started growing, many websites started to rise and there came a need to categorise them.
On the basis of the purpose of the sites, they were categorised.
For eg
.com is used for websites, which are used for commercial purpose
.gov is used for websites, which are used for Government works
.edu - for educational purpose
.org - for organisations
Since yahoo come under commercial site, it was named as yahoo.com. But yahoo grown up very well and fast so that it could not accomodate all its users under one webserver. So the yahoo commitee decided to divide the users on the basis of their residence(country).
So people of india got co.in
co.uk - for united kingdom, etc.

Well, frankly speaking, .com is applied for those sites which are commercial in nature, whereas, .co.in represents only indian commercial sites.
Note: Currently, some sites use .biz to represent business sites also.

.com means its universally commercial site on the world wide web.
.co.in means its universally commercial but it represents as indian site on the world wide web.
Its that simple so no need for large explanation needed.

The main difference batween a. com and .co.in. is . com is worldwide and .co.in is only for india.
you can also find oters like
.org -its for various organisations and institutions
.co.uk.- its websites from U.K.
its all types of domain names

if ".com" is ur yahoo id i guess it means your yahoo server is somewhere in the US wereas if its ".co.in" that means it your yahoo server is in india and the content shown to you is customized to indian taste. You get this extension (com or co.in) based on your specifying your content/location as india/us when newly creating ur ID.

.com will represent any international server while .co.in will represent indian server in a broad view.....so anything .co.in attached to it...whether it may be email or website will direct to specific indian server....or server dedicated to indian operations
