A network usually consists of four basic elements

- Network media
- Intermediate devices (switches, hubs, repeaters, ect.)
- Packet routing device
- Computer-based resources

The network media is your cabling, and depending on what type of media you use, you'll typically find at least one intermediate device in a network, frequently a switch or a hub. Routing devices are required to communicate with other networks or through WANs, and make sure that resources are interconnected. Your resources are your equipment. This includes client machines, servers, printers, anything that you aim to interact with -through- the network.
