Intramuros - for heritage houses, church and museum including the famous Rizal Park or Luneta Park.
Roxas Blvd. - the Manila bay during sunset, baywalk with live bands and restaurants, CCP complex and the newest biggest mall - "Asia Mall".
Makati area - museum, very nice landscape of American cementery, village of the rich people in the Philippines, malls, and tall buildings or the business area in Manila.

Since you limit your question to Manila, I have the following recommends. But definitely try to get out of Manila ASAP to enjoy the Philippines. In Metro Manila, here is my list in no particular order:
For Shopping:
Tutuban - dirt cheap
Greenbelt - lavishly rich
SM Mall of Asia - Great middle class place, with incredible view of the sunset and fireworks every friday and saturday at 7 p.m., with an IMAX theater and a dolphin show until mid january.
For Bars-nightlife:
Malate - great bars, great restaurants, great places for Music lovers. Go to Ratsky. Vist the Library, a comedy bar.
Timog - if you are a guy ;-). There is a school there where you might find your classmates. But only if you're a guy.
Find a bar wherever SITTI is performing for pure island bossa delight.
For tourists:
Luneta- Orchidarium (theres a restaurant near there where you can fish for tilapia). I'm not sure if they still do concert at the park there.
Fort Santiago - There is nothing much to see in nearby Fort Santiago. But you might want to see it if you are interested in Rizal exhibit.
CCP Complex - check out what's showing.

Depending on what your interests are, Manila has a lot of places to visit. I pressume you refer to Manila as Metro Manila (?). Depending also on how much time you have to go around ...
You can go to Makati for shopping or the Mall of Asia in Pasay City (I don't know if they detached it already from Pasay as I think they call the place Bay City).
Manila City has the old places like Intramuros, Fort Santiago, etc.
If you are interested with squatters, they are all over!
If you like President Arroyo, she's in Malacañang Palace in the city of Manila.
If you want to dine with us, send us a text message ... ;-)
