I live in a 1 bedroom apt. in a rent controlled building in Los Angeles. My new wife moved in and the landlord is increasing the rent. I'm assuming this is legal but is there a limit to the increase? I am currently month to month and I should also note that I never signed a lease 7 years ago.

Thanks in advance.

In San Francisco, this would be illegal even if the lease covered it. But that may not be true in LA.

It's a local issue. Check http://www.ci.la.ca.us/lahd/ for your city's rules, or to find a number to call if you can't find a clear answer online.

Actually, I think this PDF: http://www.ci.la.ca.us/lahd/addtenants.pdf should answer your questions.

What agreement did you make with the landlord on regular rent increases? If neither have signed an agreement with respect to number of persons living in the rental, I would assume that you can challange this increase. Call your legal aid services office - they can advise you of your rights. Good Luck!

Check your rental agreement. It will tell you if, when and how much your rent can be inceased.
