It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, wars and so on - whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reasons.

I have notice that the dolphins seem to be laughing at us. We do tend to complicate life, while they are content to live with what they need. Which is smarter?

that's douglas adams, right? i mean, i like douglas adams and all, he wrote some funny and interesting stuff, but i'm not sure i'd call him a "great man." (if it wasn't douglas adams, ok. he definitely said similar things.) as for the actual content of the quotation, i agree with it in certain ways. i don't think dolphins are more intelligent than humans, but i do think there's something to be said for "mucking about in the water having a good time." on the other hand, humans used to live essentially the same way, with each person gathering the food he/she needed to survive, and not bothering with much else. the only problem with that is that it isn't really possible unless the population density is at or below about one person/square mile. today, there's just not enough space for us not to have built new york. living standards declined sharply when we started herding animals and growing our own food. we didn't do it for kicks.

Douglas Adams was indeed a great man. I have long wondered if the dolphins were having such a good time. I mean, has anyone ever asked them? Maybe they're stressed all the time. I don't think it's possible to have a properly informed opinion on this subject until we can establish meaningful communication with dolphinkind.

It maybe true that things aren't always what they seem, but this saying, whoever said it, doesn't make a good point of it. The universe is complex enough for humans to know that there is always more to a point. I think we'll never even touch what the most important point to living is all about.

well, one may say we are just far more stupid than we think, mad and hypocrites, and dolphins are designed to just have a good time in the water and everything, plus we do not have the brain to measure intelligence.maybe not even stupidity.next
