As already said, the idea is that when applying for a job everyone gets assessed on their qualifications/suitability for the job. Things like age, sex, race and religion aren't to be thought of allowing equal opportunities. However a lot of organisations monitor their equal opportunities policy by checking the race of their workforce with the demigraphics in the local area. So if an orginasation has no asian people in an area which is 20% asian then what will happen is they'll need to take on some Asians, so if you're caucasian or afro carribian in the next interview even though you could be best qualified for the job, you may not get it. So really it's all just a farce!

Dirty has a point, and Paul spoke the ideals. To me it means everyone (ideally) has the right to the opportunity to succeed or fail, the opportunity to go to a given uni or to be considered for a given job, or if necessarily to receive benefits.
It sadly is not so, in many cases favouritism goes to...well let's put it this way...If you or I don't get into the uni we want, or we don't get a certain job, then someone else either got lucky or there was favouritism involved!

In theory, it means that everyone should have the same opportunities regardless of their racial origin, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, etc, etc. In practice, a lot of places have 'quotas' and so (mostly) people who aren't white get preferential treatment.
