Since Christmas is becoming more blatantly pagan each year, and since its real origins have nothing to do with Jesus but worship of the Roman Sol Invictus it may be a good idea to encourage the making of and sending to our friends of'Bah Humbug' cards, so that fair and reasonable people can separate nonsense and blatant commercialism from goodwill with less pressure. Christmas as we know it is little short of a self-induced form of torture on adults and children also. We act like barbarians and send totally absurd messages to the young by us putting up with this farce.

For Christmas to have any meaning it must be separated from all that places demands on us each year on 25th December. Cromwell banned it in English history. But the old paganism re-asserted itself. Pity we couldn't have a calendar without 25th December featuring in it. Sorry, can't write more - must assemble my plastic christmas tree and get a loan for all the presents the kids want.

If the Church didn't support this absurd festival when did it speak out against it ?
Or is this a Christmas tree I see in the Vatican square or just an apparition ?

I'm with you, I don't feel like I should be responsible as a Christian for bringing retailers back in the black for the winter,
Sol = the reason we have church service on (Sun)-day to appeal to the pagans. The sabbath is the seventh day, not the first. The giving spirit is a good thing if we could do it without all the stress, but a good Christian gives every day of the year.

***Christmas was first and formost a Polytheistic Holy Day for the Roman God Saturn. There was gift-giving and decorations, and general cheeryness. It's not Saturnalia's fault Christians came in and renamed it Christmas, that was the Catholic Church trying to be more appealing to outsiders. And it's neither's fault when it comes to big spending...Why not make something instead, or are you too caught up working off debts from last year? Hmph. If you're worried about barbarism, one person at a time is all it takes to stop the chain of violence in Wal-Marts and Game-Stops.

Rather negative aren't you-to begin with Christmas was a Pagen celebration-so as it was;so shall it be.Yes to a certian point I do agree with what you are saying but also know that we are becoming a global community and as the differences, structure, beliefs, practices, customs, rituals all clash, collide and try to sort and harmonise themselves we have to invoke patience, acceptance and a positive perspective on the whole issue rather then being rigidly tunnel sighted.Hang on firmly to your personal foundational sacredness and allow others the same courtesy and in its own time,in it's own way it will all come together and fall into place. It won't happen in a day,may not even happen in your lifetime but make no mistake what is to be will be.We are all visitors on this planet, who knows what the Creator of such a Creation has in mind.In essence Christmas is a lot more then the obvious religious?,holiday-it is also a time of showing apprecation,of caring ,sharing,loving,re-evaluating,taking time out to spend alone time, family time,to teach and instill deceant values into your children as you yourself look to them to reunite with your own innoence and the kids within you.People are always on the go throughout the year-but it is during this time that people are afforded the luxury of the fruits of their labours. Not everyone is fortunate however so for all said and down one can also exercise the courage of goodwill and charity to their fellow man.Kindness dosen't always have a dollar sign-it can even be as priceless as a warm, loving smile,a cup of hotchoclate and a donut.apair of mitts, tukes or even tube socks.time is also charity.Nothing is easy or clear cut but as a parent we can only do the best that we can with what we know, have and understand.I do feel your frustration however what choice do we have because there are those amounst us that do live only, to live for and only for the all mighty dollar. My friend in the end it will be what you want it to be, so what and how do you want it to be-then make it happen! If the money hungry oppourtuntists can make it happen then what's stopping our path? They suceed because we encorage it-what would happen if we encouraged ourselves? It 's got to start somewhere. You may not be superfically popular but you will be genuinely respected for blazing an enlightened path.Have a great holiday season,Merry Christmas and and an absolute fantastic New Year and may the Powers that be bless us one and all.peace.Riz>.Chin up my friend!

I can't believe how disappointed I am with this question especially the details.

First, there is nothing in common between Christmas (even materialistic Christmas) and the Seven Deadly Sins. We are surrounded by sin, and none of us is free from it.

Second, Christmas is a holy day designated by the Roman Catholic Church for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Jesus was born in September 4 B.C. The fact that someone took the time and effort to be thankful to God for sending a redeemer is surprising. (Surprising to me.)

Compare to other things, Jesus birth is only the beginning. There are more important holy days, Easter and Pentecost, and we should be thankful that we only have to deal with bunnies and candies.

What you make of celebrations you don't wish to celebrate is up to you. You can buy and exchange gift or not; you can pray with others or not; and finally you can make yourself miserable over the silliest issues. To single out Christmas as pagan is to only point out the obvious. It isn't that Christmas is going pagan, it is pagan having some small Christian influence.

I hope to take this answer to heart. I took the time to answer this question instead of others.

Happy Christmas anyway! It doesn't matter the date of Christ's birth, or the origin of doing it in winter. What matters is what it means in the minds and emotions of the people.
I am Anglican, but I do not deny anyone who wants to enjoy the fesitvities and warm feelings and kind thoughts the right to them.
Who knows, maybe some old scrooge will find it just a little heart melting some cold Christmas season day, and think "wot if?"
Peace, Love, joy and happynesses this Christmas season...for all who read this!

The timetables and position of Polaris leading people to Bethlehem tell that Jesus was probably born in our month of October. Dec 21 was the celebration of the Winter Solstice and the two were combined by the Roman Catholic church in an attempt to squelch the pagan celebration.

So maybe you're right. Maybe it should go back to its pagan roots.

Newsflash: "Christmas" started out as a pagan holiday. Jesus was not born on December 25th. Smoke that.

Like your train of thought here. Yes, we should re-name it as the Festival of the 7 Deadly Sins. Most of us will be committing several of them over this period anyway (if not all year round).

Your festive card though needs a re-think. We ought to create a Goddess of the 7 Deadly Sins and have her depicted on the greeting cards. Ideally she will be completely blue, slightly shiny, and she will have seven arms. She will have some kind of big golden headpiece on like the Asian deities do. In each of her seven hands she will be depicting a deadly sin, ie. one of her hands will balance a groaning plate of food and a large glass of wine.

I think it is time Jesus retired. Xmas seems to be a time for excess and more excess anyway, so ......... bye bye big guy.
