I love a good PB&J, almost as much as an MLT (Mutton, lettuce and tomato), but I digress. It was a clear outline of issues and solutions, but at the same point not earth shattering. Basic business states that you focus your efforts. Not one single company can be everything to everybody. Companies that pursue that course of action are doomed to fail at some point (if they have competition). One item I would question is the 15-20% cut in staff. While there might be data that supports that, at least in the document that I read from the Wall St. Journal, it seems off the cuff, off the top of the head. I would question where the data is that supports that number.

The solution has to come from a core of people made up of people throughout the company. That group should be tasked with coming up with a unified message of what the company will pursue and then hold itself to that line. Jack Welch of GE wrote a book called Winning. As a company, you need to get rid of the bottom 10 percent, reward the top 20 percent and look to growing the other 70 percent. Vision comes from the top based on an in-depth understanding of the makeup of the company, what its resources are (people, money) and then sells that vision to all members in the company. Using the top 20, you make it happen, and sell it to the middle 70 and dump the bottom 10.
