In the HBO original series The Wire, you can see cops up in vacant houses. Does this happen in real life?

I'm sure if they were doing surveillance they'd go up into a vacant to conceal themselves or get a better view.

For the most part, though, most of those vacants are just that, vacant. In some of them you can barely walk because you risk falling through floor, if there even is a floor.
