And what is their reasoning for being this way?Is it because they have to put on many masks to feel accepted?

How to tell . . . when the person's actions don't follow their words. And, why are they this way? Insecurity. Rather than them standing authentically in their own power of their own individual self. they feel that they need to be a chameleon so others will like them. That and maybe a bit of not being compassionate. In a word " insecure ".

Hi Greg,

The way you can tell if a person is two-faced is by listening to them speak about friends, colleagues and general social issues. People love to give their opinions about everything, this site is a good example of this comment.

If you listen to their tone and spirit of their conversation you will hear and see what that person is about. You can figure out if they are sincere or not.

People have many motive for being two-faced as you may suspect. It can be jealousy, insecurity, mean spirited, or lack of character.

You can not rationalise their behaviour, so do not try. They are not starting from a position of kindness, as you assume when you try. They really care little about being accepted as they have a high level of self-admiration and ego. They always strive to feel superior at the expense of others. Professional two-faced people become diagnosed sociopaths.

Stay clear of these folks and they soon move on to their own level of friends and play game with each other. Did you not see Danger Liaisons?

You've answered your own question! Very good!
I believe that is partly the reason why people are two-faced. They tell you one thing, all nice and smiling, and the second you turn your back, they're saying something completely different, or talking about you, etc...it's pretty bad to have friends that are this way. I used to know some women who did that, on a daily basis. They'd smile and be all nice to you when you were there, with them, and then I'd find out, from someone else that after I left, they were teasing about me, or making rude comments. Then when I approached these same women, again, they acted like nothing happened, and were really nice, etc.
These were very insecure women, though. They had each other as companions, only because they all shared the same common ground - being two-faced, arrogant women, with nothing good to say about anyone, and who enjoyed verbally slaughtering everyone around them, instead of to their faces! They were cowards and not too many people got along with them.
But it's true, they did say nasty things about certain people, and agreed on certain things, and when they were with a completely different group, they would change their tune, and their beliefs were totally different. It was amazing that these women could even sleep at night, knowing that they must not even know themsleves, after lying to themselves, just to please everyone around them!! UGHHhh...What drama

Yes, these are the people that say one thing and side with one person's opinion, then turn around and say the opposite. They aren't consistent...it's almost like having a split personality! It's true, they do feel they have to put on these masks in order to make everyone feel like they agree with them. They're scared to actually be themself.

They are deceitful and controlling. This is common in workplaces and can be constrewed as work place harassment. Women from the north of England who work in schools are good at it. I hate them.

i usually find out when its to late and i hear from one of the very few people that i trust that they've been talking about me and that its been hurtful and lies. i usually just figure that for some reason they are uncomfortable either with me or themselves and just want to say what they think the people around them want to hear.
