Why would you want to do that? What difference does it make to you what language people speak, especially if you are not part of the conversation? You are expressing a rather racist view, and if you are Canadian, you must understand that Multiculturalism is guaranteed in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and speaking ones own language is one of those things that is allowed when they want to. You should maybe be more attentive to your own behaviour, and if you really are interested in what they are saying, you could always learn Chinese.

Help them learn English, to begin with. How do a group of Chinese folks convince you to make an effort to learn some of their language?

With all due respects, if you are the new guy, the onus is on you to break the language barrier, ie. you are the one who should try to speak Chinese, not the other way round.

If you talk to them in English, they'll have to reply back in English. Just make sure you get included in the conversation by participating in it. I know it's hard though. But, friendship and trust take time.

Its natural for groups of people to converse in the language they're most comfortable with.

this is true of ANY ethnicity.

If they're loud you can ask them to quiet down, but otherwhise theres nothing you can do.
