India will be a world power in about 40 yrs time
United States Ambassador David Campbell Mulford came to India in early 2004, a time when India-US relations were undergoing a dramatic shift, and saw Indian democracy in action in the general election of May that year.
A great champion of private enterprise, the former merchant banker (he was chairman, Credit Suisse First Boston before being nominated ambassador to India) told a Confederation of Indian Industry meeting in March 2004 that 'History will attest to the fact that great national partnerships and alliances in the modern world thrive when all elements of government, corporate and civil societies are engaged. And sometimes, dare I say it, the private sector runs well ahead of the public sector.'
A year later, India and the US signed a historic declaration, pledging 'their resolve to transform the relationship between their countries and establish a global partnership.'
Today, the United States Congress is debating the India-US nuclear deal, which will give India access to technology denied since its atomic tests of May 18, 1974.
In an exclusive online chat with readers of rediff.com, Ambassador Mulford spoke not just about the nuclear deal, but also about Washington's motivations behind befriending India, its relationship with Pakistan, and the state of the US economy.

India is developing rapidly. The Indian education system is producing very well educated citizens who may live abroad for a while but many return. India and China are ascending and the United States is in decline. Look at our manufacturing base: cameras, electronics, clothing. Look at our automobile manufacturers: poor quality, managers who concentrate on greedy short-term gain running their corporations into the ground, greedy unions that protect the lowest most incapable workers. Toyota and Honda are eating American car companies with a management philosophy that is fair, transparent, and a long term view. Employees at the US Toyota and Honda plants do not need unions and are able to produce excellent quality products.
Will India develop? Does water run down hill?

Sure but provided present political system should change. Politicians are a strong inhibiting factor in India's growth particularly in the mode of suppressing natural talent and promoting corruption.

yes india will develop but not at the rate it should.
the main problem is population explosion.
there is always some part of population below the poverty level. you cannot call india as developed india with people who have to strive hard to get bread to eat once a day.
