I have always been a night owl myself. It isn't so bad on me now as I have a 2nd shift job. But it used to be pretty miserable when I was a school teacher and had to face a class of bright eyed kids and I only had 4 hours of sleep.
I will find anything to do to avoid going to sleep at night. Heck, I know every night worker by their first name at our local Super Wal Mart. LOL

Well I sort of have the same problem. Firstly my husband is in the military and is gone for several months at a time so it is difficult to sleep well without him. Secondly I have a bad habit of getting on the computer at night (I am hooked on Yahoo answers and it is really addictive.) I also like to watch late night talk shows (David Letterman, Conan Obrien) and usually play computer games, yahoo answers, and watch TV at the same time. So it is really a bad habit and it is not that I can't go to sleep I just know that I 'won't'. And thirdly, I am pregnant and it is common to have onsomnia while pregnant.
My advice to you would be to take a warm bath, get in bed and read a boring book. Boring books always make you sleepy. If that doesn't work then there are some herbal teas with chamomile that help you to relax but sleeping pills also work. Simply Sleep is a good pill to take for that. Also make sure that you are laying comfortably and that you feel warm/cool enough. Soft bed sheets and blankets are important and also sleepwear that feels comfortable to you. If other parts of the house is noisy then turn on a fan or something that drains out the sound. Good luck and catch some zzz's.

What time do you get up in the morning? That could have something to do with why you stay up late at nite.
Think about it. Usually when one is unable to sleep is because they arent tired enough. It can become a vicious cycle.

if you're a teenager: it's normal to be awake at night and asleep in the morning.
If you're not a teenager: break you're cycle. don't sleep during the day. sleep at night only. once you get back into teh habit of sleeping at night everything will be normal. When in bed do not try to sleep.
Here are two suggestions on going to sleep: 1)think of unimportant things or think of nothing at all.
2)pretend you're asleep. <--this works well for me.

Get a night job? I am a night owl, and when I was a bartender I was up to 4 or 5 am. It was perfect for me at the time.

Figure out what you are staying up about.
Is it the only alone time you have?
Do you need to restrict your night-time activity?
Put yourself on a schedule.
Read a book to sleep.
Turn down the volume.
