I have fitted out a 5bedroom home with a home security kit.
As long as you wire everything correctly it works great.

It can be, depending on the complexity of the house and the complexity of features that you want.
If you just want intrusion detection with a siren, that's not hard.
If you want a system that calls a service (or 911), allows you to arm or disarm remotely, etc. you're probably getting in above your head.
Alarms scare off the nuisance and dumb thieves. No house is really impervious. I've seen homes have their power lines and telephone lines cut; without a battery backup and a cell phone for redundancy, it makes your house deaf as a post. I've seen homes where the stone foundation was broken through with a sledgehammer. I've seen homes accessed through the roof or through an attic vent or fan. I've even seen a home's basement door pushed in by a car. Several of these were vacant houses where the valuables were the copper piping !
Ultimately, anyone can break a door frame. They'll probably have 5 minutes before the system calls the service, the service calls the house and verifies that it isn't a mistake and calls the police and the police arrive.
It really depends on what you want to keep safe and why. You should give that some thought before thinking about how to protect those things (security deposit box, home safe, etc.).

A final thought is to install hidden cameras where you valuables are and have them record to a central VCR or digital recorder. Turn it on when you leave and shut it off when you return. The only time you have to view a recording is when someone actually breaks in.

The operative words are that it is a security system. Whether you install it or someone else does is academic. A security system needs to be installed correctly in order to work. Look over the directions and be sure about the features you're getting. If the project is beyond your ability, then hire someone else to do it.

You also need to be aware of monitoring. A system by Brinks or ADT will report directly to them if there is an intrusion. Where does this one report? Does it report at all?

SELF INSTALLED ARE GOOD ONLY FOR Y. THEY ARE NOT CONNESTED TO A MONITORING COMPANY OR LACAL 911 SYSTEM UNLESS U HIRE A COMPANY TO DO THIS MONITORING. THEY ARE THE ONES THAT CALL 911 ETC.
ANY SELF INSTALLED SYSTEM THAT WILL DETER THE THIEF IS GREAT. BUT IF THEY WANT TO GET IN THEY WILL AND AS U KNOW THEY HOPE THAT THEY DONT GET CAUGHT. THERE ARE SOME UNITS THAT WILL CONTACT U BUT AS THE OTHER PERSON MENTIONED THEN U CALL 911 TO HAVE THEM CHECK IT OUT. MOST EITY, COUNTY AND STATES HAVE REGULATION ON THE AMOUNT OF FALSE ALAMS U ARE ALLOWED PER MONTH, YEAR ETC THEN U HAVE TO PAY A QUOTE TRIP CHARGE. SOME SUGGESTIONS IS GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS, LOCAL PD THAT PATROLS YOUR AREA AND START UP A NEIGHBOR WATCH TEAM IN YOUR AREA
