I dislike people telling me to smile more though. It's a bit patronizing. It's like I'll smile when I have a perfectly good reason to, thanks. (for male Daria-ness)

Seems simple, but actually that's a good question. Why do humans smile when animals don't? or do they? What's it's purpose with our species? Maybe to signal to others that we're receptive, not hostile,...

At a very basic level, according to scientists, because we evolved from animals.
Smiling shows teeth (dominance) and health (healthy gums, white teeth) to others.
Smiling also requires flexing the face muscles, again signaling degree of dominance-signal of health.
