TNA is not a sorry company. There is many ways that TNA is better than WWE.
WWE has too many squash matches.
TNA has good quality matches.
WWE does the same thing every week.
TNA has the X-Division.
WWE doesn't have much of a Tag Team Division.
TNA actually has a Tag Team Division.
Not all of TNA's wrestlers are former WWE Superstars.
Many of TNA's wrestlers have never even worked for WWE including the following: AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, Samoa Joe, Sting, Chris Sabin, Abyss,James Storm, Chris Harris, Alex Shelley, Chase Stevens, Andy Douglas, Petey Williams, and many more!
Sting decided against working for WWE because of all the nasty storylines (such as necrophilia angle, etc.) and is really religious and prefers not to be involved in dirty, nasty, sick storylines. Just because he hasn't competed against the likes of HBK, Triple H, etc doesn't make him less of an Icon.
Just because a wrestler works for WWE doesn't make them the best in the business!
Just because WWE has more TV time does not make them better!!

It has nothing to do weather or not they use WWE wrestlers, but its more of how they use them. Think about it... The hottest time in pro wrestling bar none is when wrestlers were jumping back and forth from WWF to the WCW. How did WCW become big? They ran it off of former WWF stars. They had the hottest in-ring product for a couple of years, and they did what they could to keep their titles strong. Then WCW failed because they couldn't push the new stars to the top and that was what the problem was.
NWA-TNA Wrestling is running into the exact same type of deal. They have wrestlers that you would associate with their product such as A.J. Styles, Somoa Joe, Christopher Daniels, Abyss, Chris Sabin as well as others. You add in people who have experience and can lend that hand and train the young superstars such as Kurt Angle, Christian, and yes, even Jeff Jarrett, then you are doing what you are supposed to do. Now I know that some may go why Jeff, but Jeff knows how to work. He just needs to keep the title off himself.
Then there comes the Vince Russo booking problem. How in the world can TNA replace team of Mike Tenay among others for Vince Russo. The man who ruined WCW, the man who doesn't believe in the Cruiseweights/X-Division or letting the guys wrestle nor does he believe in the value of the title and just flip flops it to every single wrestler alive. And Russo is also the one who could write a good intro to a book but never knew how to finish the story.
That there is the real problem with TNA. You cannot write wacky stories, and make your wrestlers look like idiots and flip flop wresters from face (good guy) to heel (bad guy) and heel to face thinking it will keep fans tuned in. Fans will then get confused and change the channel. Having Somoa Joe lose twice to Kurt in two weeks was stupid also. I love TNA but I hate Vince Russo and WWE isn't doing anything exciting either. Here's hoping that Russo is fired soon.

The situation is very similar to the way that the WWF grew in the early 80's, and how WCW grew in the early to mid 90's.
Vince McMahon and the World Wrestling Federation raided the talent roster of more successful companies, such as the AWA in Minnesota and other more established promotions, and signed Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Ted DiBiase, Curt Hennig, Bobby Heenan, Rick Rude, and dozens of other big names of the era. Without signing these men, the top talent in the WWF would've been guys like Paul Orndorff and Greg Valentine...both very talented wrestlers, but not enough to get the attention or ticket sales they needed. As a result, the company took off and became a success, to the point where they could bring up their own wrestlers and get them over.
Ted Turner and World Championship Wrestling did the exact same thing by signing Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Ted DiBiase, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and dozens of other top names of the era. As a result, WCW was thrust into the mainstream and defeated the WWF in tv ratings, ticket sales to the point where they could create their own stars and get them over (Goldberg, for example). It was only due to the Turner merger with Time Warner that WCW fell into mismanagement and failed. Had it not been for that merger, WCW would most likely exist today.
These days, TNA is signing top talent of the era, such as Kurt Angle, the New Age Outlaws, Christian, Sting and guys like Samoa Joe, AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels, who made their name on the indy scene. As a result, they have grown from a company that could only hold one show on ppv each week with no tv deal to a company with a primetime television deal with an established cable network, and a strong record of ppv buyrates.
That's how the business works. Small companies lure large stars so that they can make their own stars. They are following the same formula as every successful company before them, and with the backing of Panda Energy (a billion dollar corporation that owns TNA), they have the money and resources to continue. Now obviously, many of their storylines are just as ridiculous as the WWE, but they do give wrestling fans an alternative on television of a product that features a majority of wrestling matches, as opposed to a majority of skits, interviews and soap opera.

I agree with you. TNA would have died without the WWE superstars coming to it. I mean those stupid superstars that started with TNA? They suck, and the only ones that people like in TNA and that actually wrestle good, are Kurt Angle and Christian Cage, who have both been in the WWE first. Jeff Hardy used to be on TNA Impact, before resigning with the WWE, and I understand why he did that. There is no competition for former WWE stars on TNA, because the WWE has all the cool matches. Also, I agree that Sting should not be called an Icon. Shawn Michaels calls himself the Icon, because he has deserved it. He once held every title in the company, making himself the Grand Slam Champion. He deserved the name, and didn't just self-proclaim himself. Sting is just like King Booker. They are both losers. They self-proclaimed themselves "the king of SmackDown!" and the "Icon".

I agree TNA wouldn't have any kind of chance without the old WWE stars. He didn 't work for the WWE because of the storylines did not agree with his new found Christianity. Were as Sting has not wrestled the majority of the stars you mentioned above, he has wrestled with or against some of the greatest, like Flair, Hogan, Horseman in every faction, the Funks, just to name a few. I know he has wrestled HBK when he was just starting out with his former tag team partner Marty Janetty. Even though I am a huge fan of Orton and Edge still too young for them to be considered icons, but they will be. I would love to see a match between Sting and Undertaker, shoot I'd love to see a match having Sting face each and everyone of the stars you mentioned above. Hope this helps you out there a little.

No wrestling company is going to make it without ESTABLISHED stars, and for the most part the only place to get that is WWE. So yeah, they need those guys, but really, anyone would. Casual fans aren't going to watch a wrestling show where they don't know anyone wrestling. What TNA needs to do, and is doing a fairly good job of, is mixing in their own homegrown stars up with the established vets so that in the future, they will be the established stars.

In a ways, (I started watching TNA in 2004), I am not liking what is happening with TNA. They were innovative when Russo was running things, the weekly ppv's etc. But when they started getting WCW and WWE rejects, it has began to be run of the mill predictable.
