I think it's in our nature to be in shock and can't move when something 'out of the ordinary' is happening. People want to see what's going to happen next. They need to be involved, somehow, even if on the sidelines.
Who knows? It was a movie, and in reality, I think a MAJORITY of people would have been running for the hills, upon the first sign of those weird clouds, and lightening strikes! I know, myself, that if that ever happened, in my area, I would have been long gone, the moment I seen clouds like what they showed in that movie!! No need for me to stick around and get zapped by some alien invader, no sir!! I got bills to pay, food to buy, and Christmas is just around the corner, for Pete's Sake! No time for aliens, let me tell you!!...
