If anyone happens to have a Consumer Reports subscription, can you tell me what they rank the best cordless drill? I don't know squat about drills and it's what my husband wants for x-mas. Thanks.

Well, anything DeWalt. Somethings, especially tools, are good to buy name brand. It really depends on what your going to do with as to which one to pick out. DeWalts will last forever and withstand some SERIOUS abuse. I know this because I used to work in heating and air, I have had to carry a drill under houses, in attics, drop them from attics onto concrete. I have actually seen one drill drop all the way from the peak of a 15-foot ceiling that was still open, into the deep end of an empty pool (at least 10 more feet) and still run when we got it out.

How sweet. I know that a "maquita" (spelled incorrectly, sorry) is a really good drill, however being really expensive. They are easily distinguishable by their blue color, for women robins egg (blue), and again are really expensive compared to others. However, i suspect he wants a cordless drill so i will advise you to get an 18 volt or higher. The bigger the better! ( thats a guy motto). At any rate a drill that is less than that is useless for "real" applications.

Something to think about: i work in a place that is murder on drills and have discovered that drills really dont last all too long when subjected to harsh conditions, brand name or not.

There are so many on the market today it's a real challenge to find the one for you. You need to ask yourself what am I going to use it for? light craft work or are you going to build a deck using pressure treated lumber. There are places where you can try before you buy, maybe that would help you decide. Myself I like the DeWalt, Panasonic makes an excellent drill, but like I already mentioned, there are so many. Maybe check the consumers guide on drills. I believe you can find the consumers guide on the Internet, you just need to search a little. Good luck!!!

CR just put the 18 volt Bosch at the top of the list of best buy for the buck. I have one. Let me say I would tend to disagree with them. It worked well but the batteries are very expensive. I`m now using a 5 yr old 14.4volt Dewalt. It does`nt miss a lick.

My husband has a 19.2 cordless drill by Craftsman has had it for about three years and have had no problems. cost's about a third of price than the Dewalt and Makita. also if you buy from Sears and something goes wrong you can take it back and they will give you a new one.
