Tobacco is responsible for over 400,000 deaths every year from cancers, lung, heart and other vascular diseases. Marijuana has been linked to over 30% of vehicular trauma cases and is the most commonly abused illegal drug. It contains 50% higher concentrations of cancer causing agents than tobacco.
Marijuana and tobacco cause at least the same amount of injury to the airways, pulmonary function, and lung immunity. Recent studies have demonstrated increased health care utilization among heavy marijuana smokers for respiratory problems.
Tobacco, particularly nicotine, is addictive. Many physicians, consider tobacco one of the hardest drugs to quit using. Marijuana is addictive, and is also one of the hardest drugs for addicts to quit. They often return to marijuana first if they relapse. The nicotine content of cigarettes varies. The major addictive ingredient in marijuana, THC, varies from 3%-29%.
Tobacco is associated with birth abnormalities. Marijuana is associated with decreased birth weight, length and shorter duration of pregnancy. Recent studies have demonstrated that young children exposed to marijuana during pregnancy have a ten-fold higher risk of developing acute non-lymphoblastic leukemia.
Although the number of marijuana "cigarettes" consumed in a day would generally be far fewer than the daily total of tobacco cigarettes, the technique is different. Cannabis smoke is usually inhaled far deeper, held in the lungs much longer and smoked right down to the butt to get the full money value. Marijuana cigarettes generally do not have filters and more tar is inhaled from the butt of the marijuana cigarette than its tip. Contrary to what a previous answer to you stated, it is a fact that cannabis contains 4 to 5 times the amount of tar found in tobacco smoke. So the amount of tar deposited in a marijuana smokers lung would make it comparable to a tobacco smoker who smokes 20 tobacco cigarettes a day.
People frequently refuse to quit tobacco because it helps some of them lose weight and manage anxiety despite severe health consequences. A strong movement is supporting the use and legalization of smoked marijuana as medicine despite severe health consequences, toxicity, and the availability
of safer more effective medications for the various medical problems. No major medical organization would ever support tobacco as medicine. No major medical organization supports the use of smoked marijuana as medicine.
So the answer is that both tobacco and marijuana pose serious and established health risks and both are addictive. Which one is worse? Your choice but consider this. Marijuana does indeed contain more cancer causing carcinogens than tobacco, notably benzpyrene, a very potent carcinogen and a key factor in the promotion of lung cancer. Tobacco seems to be more addictive than marijuana yet marijuana has established psychological effects not found in tobacco.
While I do not recommend either, keep this in mind. One can get you arrested and possibly put in jail and the other won't. It's up to you to decide which one is worse.

Listen to Chris H, he's right. Some of you are off on your weed facts. A vaporizer is the cleanest way to smoke weed because it only burns off the THC. Rolling papers may have chemicals in them but they aren't near as bad as the crap they ADD to tobacco. Usually the only chemicals they add to papers just add a nice flavor like strawberry, grape, mint, chocolate or my personal favorite, peach.
