"While air conditioner systems do dehumidify... basements, bathrooms, and closets are often not well ventilated. In addition, dehumidification is often needed during the spring and fall months, when air conditioners are turned off. If there is a musty smell, it is likely you need a dehumidifier to avoid mold and mildew growth. Mold and mildew spores are a common household allergen, often causing watery eyes, a runny nose, and sneezing."
"Mould occurs around 68% humidity, condensation occurs at 100%. As you can see from this you can have mould but still have clear windows. A dehumidifier will prevent the mould from getting any worse and once you have cleaned the mould away it will stop it from coming back. dehumidifier will reduce the relative humidity in the house, which will prevent dust mites and other pests from breeding. In this way a dehumidifier can help with allergies."

Dehumidifiers range widely in cost, depending on their size and capacity and whether they are portable or built into your home's ventilation system. A small portable dehumidifier for a bathroom can cost well under $200. A built-in home ventilating dehumidifier may cost $1,500 to $2,000. If allergy symptoms from molds and mites plague your family, dehumidifiers can be well worth the cost. Check the capacity rating to see what size dehumidifier you need. The rating you want depends on how big and how damp the room is where you'll use it.
