Well, what are the defining features of "democracy"?
If you look in books on the subject they have lists of
properties. One is "contestation". The USA does very badly on that since federal and statehouse races are about 98% predictable
over 1 year ahead of time. This is one of the worst in
the world. Another is freedom of the press and
information (can't have a democracy if citizens cannot be informed).
USA is doing fairly well on that - better than, say, Great Britain,
but not as well as Switzerland where freedom of information is written into their constitution. Recently measures like
the US govt paying fake journalists to issue fake news reports
and ask fake questions and plant fake stories, and attempts
to force reporters to reveal their sources, has been seen as
a reduction in press freedom and efficacy.
In the USA there is much artificial secrecy such as Bush2 made a declaration that, contrary to a law signed by Reagan, all of Reagan/Bush presidential records were to be kept secret...
Another is suffrage. The USA is also pretty good on that albeit
imperfect - although before 1960 blacks were massively prevented from voting (and before 1900 women...) For that reason most serious scholars in this area claim the USA was not a democracy before the 1970s. Another is basic liberties such as habeas corpus, which Bush and congress recently canceled.
(If the govt has the power to kidnap or kill anybody without
accountability or due process, it
has ultimate undemocratic power which trumps everything else.) Basically without habeas corpus, all
agree you cannot have a democracy. The only reason to regard the USA as a democracy is then to believe that the violations of habeas will be rare enough.
Another is privacy rights - if the govt can spy on you and know whatever it wants, then democracy is too easily stifled.
That was why Nixon was about to get impeached (except
for the resign+pardon deal).

Democracy is a delicate thing and the most common way it ends is
somebody in the govt taking over and assuming total power.
Will that happen to the USA?

Democracy is a broader term - not necessarily applied to worldly states of matter. Further, its a cap that loses it shape as many applies to it. How true for you can't be claimed to have been living in a time that's democratic in itself.

India, as a country that largely form a socialist country on the radical lines i.e. partially liberal yet conservationist to the core. Leave apart the many political or religious debates and concentrate on issues that are more humanitarian to analyse the role of democracy in a country like India.

India still prevails and compartmentalise itself to the world of haves and have-nots. The imaginary line remained firmly grounded and active since the Aryans set their foot. Then, segregating people i.e. we live within the realms of category and divide the world the way we live. It ain't democratic or socialist as a state - in fact, India has no political ideology of its own. One more humanitarian issue is the Article 377 of Indian Constitution. People of my gender might admonish or criticise for supporting the causes of 'gays' but then, homosexuality is a liberal approach to one's sexual urge and a country which constitutionally debars can't be holding the flag of democracy.

On the other hand, aacha hai bura hai jaisa bhi hai India is better a country to live than rest of the world coz' India is Great.

U r right ours is democratic country. But governed by muscle and power. MP represents with less than 30% of votes( Total electrorate).MP does not have a voice infront of high command.
Spends luxurious life without owning a single car, home on his name. Many more to spell but it is not prgmatic to do so.
Inspite of all this we can be proud that we are the largest democratic country.

Though the political leaders do not have sence of democratic spirit, the people in general are democratic. The way in which the people dethroning powerful and arrogant lleaders in every election peacefully and silently shows their democratic empowerment. The need is to strenghten the institutions and ensure proper institutions frameworks.

Now the USA is not democratic at all.
There is still death penalty in many states.
Your country is famous for scandals that concerned private life: president and his administration listened to calls of common people, read their letters and so on.
The role of mass media is great, but they are just cleaning your brains and influence your consciousness. Your are not free in many senses
Thanks I am not from the USA

You have answered your own question. I too love it not for what it is to-day but for its past achievements and glory as well as for its potential for making a great country. I would love to see it as a great moral force in the world. A democratic country, it is in deed, because its government is being by its elected representatives. But, that alone would not suffice to be qualified as a democracy. I think, on two counts it is still far from being a democratic country. Rule of law is one of the cardinal principles underlying a democracy. By that, we mean equality before law and equal treatment before law. All should be treated alike before law. Howsoever high one may be, if he is found to be on the wrong side of law, one should be brought to book for his acts of commissions and omissions. And, secondly, every body, irrespective of the place of birth, caste, religion, economic status, should be able to be entitled to equal opportunities. All should be able to strive and hope rise up in the ladder for self advancement. On these two counts, we are lagging behind. We need to strive hard to improve ourselves to qualify ourselves to be called a democracy.

Our united states of america = ??? i anticipate you return from US, because of the ego centric attitude, no offense. very nearly each united states of america is lead with the aid of the belief : "Freedom is the will, that we are able to comprehend " meaning, if i'm getting each thing I comprehend and choose i'm unfastened. it fairly is bull...it. toddlers are knowledgeable to have self assurance specific issues and while they develop up they choose those issues, the "American Dream" is an occasion, they tell people what to dream, now it fairly is ridiculous. Now if i could inform you that the extreme selfish and "patriotic" way toddlers ar thought interior the yankee colleges it relatively is very nearly comparable with the way that childrens have been thought interior the COMUNIST colleges in Romania in the previous 1989, it relatively is the comparable technique. you're advised what to consume, what to drink, what to choose, what to dream, and you think all of it. Now the place is democracy in that. yet do no longer complication it relatively is the comparable everywhere (besides right here in Romania), Jesus there are an excellent style of dumb people right here you may get scared, yet wager what, i've got met some individuals purely as dumb or maybe dumber. So in case you elect to be unfastened : get carry of expertise, open your innovations and use it as much as you may. there is not any democracy nowhere in this worldwide for stupid people.
