Perhaps the answer to this question depends on the level of the person's self-esteem.
A person with high self-esteem that is use to being successful in life, may view criticism as a stepping stone to further successes.
A person with low self-esteem that feels insecure and has a low confidence level, well, this criticism could just be the final straw, the death blow to whatever is left to their feelings of self-worth.
OK, am I being melodramatic? Well, if I am, I am still speaking from the heart of one who knows - the one with low self-esteem.

I think it depends on what kind of criticism they recieve. Constructive criticism could allow a person to perform differently and probably better at a task, but full blown criticism where it brings a person down could probably make them not want to do it ever again.

Neither praise nor blame is the object of true criticism. Justly to discriminate, firmly to establish, wisely to prescribe, and honestly to award. These are the true aims and duties of criticism.
There are different kind of people. Some get angry by criticism and some do not mind.
But those who get angry do not learn or perform better.
Those who do not mind learn nothing.
But there are those who think about criticism and try to correct that problem. They are who succeed and perform better in their life.

I agree with the previous post that it depends on the type of criticism. Constructive criticism allows the person to correct or improve his/her behavior. Negative criticism serves to belittle the person, while it fails to identify problem areas or areas for improvement. Therefore, criticism without areas for improvement will do nothing but harm the recipient psychologically. It is damaging to the person's sense of self worth, self esteem, confidence and perseverance, to name a few.

It is expected to be that way. However, some perform even worse.
