No..with most decks the headphones will plug into the mixer - you'll have to buy a jack also which comes with most Dj standard Headphones.

if your getting him decks...i'd advise going strate for a pair of technics...

if its cd decks go for the pioneer cddj series

try www.htfr.com has the best choice

steer clear of the cheaper decks when you move out of the bedroom into a club its a big difference!

Whoa hold on. The 1200/10 has been surpassed by other decks. I love them as well but it's now not uncommon to find engineers installing decks from Stanton or Vestax etc. They are cheaper, have more features (most are tacky I know) and are generally a better deck in terms of motor strength & speed. For the best part of 3 decades technics were top of the pile, but things have moved on. You are paying through the nose for the name !

As previously pointed out the turntable output needs amplifying and grounding before it is usable.
If he's also getting a mixer then the headphones should be connected to this. He can then listen to the music just by knocking the master channel off or by not switching the amp that powers then speakers on.

As for CD decks..Pionner CDJ's are the industry standard, but are VERY expensive for a beginner. It would be a waste to buy them only to find after a month he wnats to sell them becuase he can' get the hang of DJ-ing. Try aiming a bit lower...something like a CDJ200 or Stanton C304 will di for learning and they are about 1/2 price of the club standard CDJ1000 Mk2/3

decks don't have an amplifier built in. An amplifier takes the signal produced by the stylus running over the groove on the record, and as the name suggests, amplifies it to an audible sound. Therefore, the turntable will need to have it's output amplified before you can hear it.
For serious DJing decks, you will need a mixer, and you can plug headfones in to that, as the mixer acts like a pre-amplifier.

You can't get better than Technics SL1210's for analogue DJing turntables, however, they even make a really cool CD turntable that has digital outs, which means you can plug it straight in to a PC for proper modern DJ fun!!! Plus you can do scratching and all sorts, even though it's CD!!!

No situation, yet you'll favor to boost the signal from the turntable, somewhat no matter if that is a magnetic cartridge. you could get a committed amp, or feed it right into a stereo amp, and the output from that to the computer.
