Masturbation is common in both males and females, but more so in males. The frequency depends on the individual but also by the opportunity. Many boys even masturbate in the restrooms at school. It is not good or bad, it is normal. Some boys can masturbate 8 to 10 times a day. High strung people tend to masturbate more frequently and strangely, less intelligent people tend to masturbate less frequently. Some people can masturbate without lubricant, others use soap, oils, or Vaseline but caution is needed to prevent irritation. Does it do any psychological harm? No, it is a normal part of development and as men age, those over 40 years often masturbate to obtain sexual gratification as their partner is unwilling, or the vaginal tissue is too flaccid to obtain ejaculation. The normal amount of ejaculate is about 5 ccs but varies with frequency.

Using lube definitely increases your fun--and decreases the chance you'll rub too hard!
KY jelly and Astroglide are both available in Wal-Mart, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. You can also find vending machines in some restrooms that sell single-use packets of lube. If you're in a small town, it can definitely be awkward, in which case you can get creative.
Heh. I remember using vegetable oil, from my mom's pantry.
The danger with using substitute lubes, though, is that you have a risk of getting a urinary tract infection, so be cautious.
Of course, the big problem I've found is that clean up becomes much more of a chore. For me, using lube is something I'll do for a special occasion, otherwise it's just too much of a hassle.

Anything that simulates the feeling one would get from vaginal sex would be recommended as a masturbation aid. KY gel or similar products are widely available.
Where I grew up the only way you could get condoms was through a pharmacist. It was a small town and the druggist in his perverted sense would raise his voice when dealing with a young person looking to buy condoms. Talk about embarrassment!

If you are uncircumcised, you will not need to use lubricant for masturbation unless you are holding your foreskin back and massaging the naked head of your penis like a circumcised man does when he masturbates. If this is what you are doing, then you will need lubricant. If you are already circumcised you will usually need lubricant for masturbation.

Give it a try, you may like it. You will not be embarrassed for buying Vaseline or some hand cream. No need to buy specialized lubes for just that.
Good Luck!

Check these (and more in their links) groups about my own favorite and "odd"/different/"weird" masturbation techniques, centering around the B-doll fetish... Don't forget to use lubrication!
